In 1986 the Florida Legislature created the Linkage Institute Program in order
to strengthen the state’s foreign relations and promote business, educational and cultural exchange between Florida
and major world players.
The Florida/Brazil Institute was the first linkage institute created and is
currently under the auspices of the Florida Department of State’s Office of International Affairs
and is co-administered by the University of Florida and
Miami-Dade Community College.

Brazil is Florida’s number one trading partner and the two regions have many
factors that tie them together as natural partners including size, proximity, climate and cultural diversity. Both regions
are seeking to develop high-tech industries, aviation and ecotourism. In addition, Florida and Brazil both have a major
stake in the ongoing negotiations for the agreement on the Free Trade Area of the Americas,
which will eventually reduce or eliminate existing tariffs and trade barriers.
In light of these facts, it is more important than ever to promote education about each area and improve understanding
between the regions. Thus, the current website project has been created to meet the new needs of becoming global
neighbors and fulfill the overall objectives of the Florida/Brazil Institute,
which should be beneficial to both regions.
